Is 'Shame' the 'Black Swan' of 2011?

Short answer to that scintillating headline: No way! However, these two films have more in common than you might initially think -- and not just because they both come from the same studio (Fox Searchlight). Ahead, five reasons the Steve McQueen-directed sex-addiction drama 'Shame' is the 'Black Swan' of the 2011 gaggle. 1. Outstanding lead performances in not-so-outstanding movies As awards season dragged on at the end of 2010 and into this year, the buzz on 'Black Swan' went from instant classic to camp classic. The Darren Aronofsky-directed film -- specifically the cuckoo bananas third act -- was more arch and hysterical than most awards-bait, this despite a committed performance from Natalie Portman, who seemed to rise about the fray even while wallowing in 'Black Swan's' ridiculousness. 'Shame' isn't nearly as silly as 'Black Swan' -- quite the opposite, it's so ... damn ... serious -- but it's similarly flawed. As Brandon, the sex addicted NYer at 'Shame's' center, Michael Fassbender is utterly brilliant, but the film somewhat lets him down with a bit too much repetition and a not-as-shocking-as-it-wants-to-be third act. There is a lot to like in 'Shame,' but it's a tough movie to love. 2. Same-sex make-out sessions At least part of the reason 'Black Swan' grossed $329 million worldwide? That kiss between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis! 'Shame' features a similarly bracing same-sex liplock (it's a spoiler, so you'll get no more than that), though considering the participants and the film's NC-17 rating, it's doubtful that will help the bottom line. 3. NY City subways fresh out of 'Warriors' Pet peeve time: NY City subways no longer look like they did in 'The Warriors,' plastered with graffiti. Which is what makes movies like 'Shame' and 'Black Swan' (and television shows like '2 Broke Girls') so infuriating. When Brandon is riding the subway, the window behind him is covered with scribble (see above). As someone who takes that train line almost every day (it's the N and R line), I can attest that it isn't nearly as messy. This isn't 1981, 'Shame'! Come on now. 4. Up and coming ingenues playing second-fiddle In 'Black Swan,' Mila Kunis never really gets a chance to shine with Portman devouring the spotlight; in 'Shame,' Carey Mulligan is dealt a similar hand, though she does have one show-stopping moment: a downcast version of "NY, NY" that breaks Brandon's heart, and probably yours too. 5. Addiction Obviously and all, but still: 'Shame' is all about sex addiction and how it can eat away at a person's soul. 'Black Swan' is about an addiction to perfection, one compounded by the fact that Portman's Nina is certifiably crazy. (Still, no one cuts their fingernails like Nina unless they have some deep-rooted perfectionist issues.) Perhaps she and Brandon would make a great couple -- if it wasn't for that pesky mortal wound at the end of 'Black Swan.' Exactly what the National Board of Review Honours Mean for George Clooney and 'Hugo' in the Academy awards (Hint: Hardly Any)

On Tuesday, we organized the current trends of NY Film Circle Critic Honours resulting in Oscar gold -- which, with respect to the category, might be used somewhat like a barometer. Today, the nation's Board of Review honours were introduced. Prior to the NYFCC progress their date, the NBR honours were the unofficial kickoff to honours season -- but it is possible to correlation between your NBR honours as well as an eventual Oscar? If recent trends should be thought, the reply is, "most likely not." Overall, using the eight corresponding groups between your two organizations going back 5 years, the likelihood of among the those who win taking home an Oscar are 30 %. Place it by doing this: If C-3P0 just rattled and shook off this statistic, National Board of Review Best Actor champion George Clooney may want to bark back at him, "Never let me know the chances!Inch Oh, talking about Clooney, the NBR just loves him. Within the last 5 years, including this season, Clooney has won three occasions. Three! Obviously, he's yet to capture an Academy Award for the best Actor (he's won an Oscar for the best Supporting Actor, which, obviously, can also be the entire year the NBR snubbed Clooney in support of Mike Gyllenhaal). (NBR also loves Clint Eastwood, as evidenced through the inclusion from the significantly-criticized 'J. Edgar' around the NBR ten-best movies of the season list, in addition to Eastwood's win for the best Director last year for 'Invictus' and 'Letters to Iwo Jima's' Best Picture win in 2006.) Really, no acting those who win should get too looking forward to present day win. Again, during the last 5 years, the NBR only has predicted one win in each one of the four acting groups: Christian Bale (2010) and Penelope Cruz (2008) within the supporting groups and Forest Whitaker (2006) and Helen Mirren (2006) within the lead groups. Yes, the NBR Best Acting those who win haven't correlated by having an Oscar champion in 5 years. So, sorry, George Clooney. If there's one category the NBR appears to obtain right (a minimum of comparatively), it is best Modified Script. Three from the last five those who win go onto win the Oscar. With 'The Descendants' winning this season, this minor trend has a high probability of ongoing. And sure, the NBR's history for the best Director is not what anybody would call accurate (two from the last five) among individuals two Oscar those who win is Martin Scorsese (for 'The Departed'), who had been the somewhat surprising champion today for 'Hugo.' The outcomes in the last 5 years of NYFCC those who win and Oscars those who win are below (Those who win of both of them are in bold). Best Picture 2011 NBR: 'Hugo' 2010 NBR: 'The Social Network' Oscars: 'The King's Speech' 2009 NBR: 'Up Within the Air' Oscars: The Hurt Locker 2008 NBR: 'Slumdog Millionaire' Oscars: 'Slumdog Millionaire' 2007 NBR: 'No Country For Old Men' Oscars: 'No Country For Old Men' 2006 NBR: 'Letters from Iwo Jima' Oscars: 'The Departed' Best Director 2011 NBR: Martin Scorsese ('Hugo') 2010 NBR: David Fincher ('The Social Network') Oscars: Tom Hooper ('The King's Speech') 2009 NBR: Clint Eastwood ('Invictus') Oscars: Kathryn Bigelow ('The Hurt Locker') 2008 NBR: David Fincher ('The Curious Situation of Benjamin Button') Oscars: Danny Boyle ('Slumdog Millionaire') 2007 NBR: Joel and Ethan Coen ('No Country For Old Men') Oscars: Joel and Ethan Coen ('No Country For Old Men') 2006 NBR: 'Martin Scorsese' ('The Departed') Oscars: 'Martin Scorsese' ('The Departed') Best Original Script 2011 NBR: '50/50' 2010 NBR: 'Buried Oscars: 'The King's Speech' 2009 NBR: 'A Serious Man' Oscars: 'The Hurt Locker' 2008 NBR: 'Gran Torino' Oscars: Milk 2007 NBR: 'Juno' and 'Lars and also the Real Girl' Oscars: 'Juno' 2006 NBR: 'Stranger Than Fiction' Oscars: 'Little Miss Sunshine' Best Modified Script 2011 NBR: 'The Descendants' 2010 NBR: 'The Social Network' Oscars: 'The Social Network' 2009 NBR: 'Up Within the Air' Oscars: 'Precious' 2008 NBR: 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'The Curious Situation of Benjamin Button' Oscars: 'Slumdog Millionaire' 2007 NBR: 'No Country For Old Men' Oscars: 'No Country For Old Men' 2006 NBR: 'The Colored Veil' Oscars: The Departed Best Actress 2011 NBR: Tilda Swinton ('We Have to Discuss Kevin') 2010 NBR: Lesley Manville ('Another Year') Oscars: Natalie Portman ('Black Swan') 2009 NBR: Carey Mulligan ('An Education') Oscars: Sandra Bullock ('The Blind Side') 2008 NBR: Hathaway As Catwoman ('Rachel Getting Married') Oscars: Kate Winslet ('The Reader') 2007 NBR: Julie Christie ('Away From Her') Oscars: Marion Cotillard ('La Vie En Rose') 2006 NBR: Helen Mirren ('The Queen') Oscars: Helen Mirren ('The Queen') 2011 NBR: George Clooney ('The Descendants') 2010 NBR: Jesse Eisenberg ('The Social Network') Oscars: Colin Firth ('The King's Speech') 2009 NBR: George Clooney ('Up Within the Air') and Morgan Freeman ('Invictus') Oscars: Shaun Bridges ('Crazy Heart') 2008 NBR: Clint Eastwood ('Gran Torino') Oscars: Sean Penn ('Milk') 2007 NBR: George Clooney ('Michael Clayton') Oscars: Daniel Day-Lewis (You Will See Blood') 2006 NBR: Forest Whitaker ('The Last King of Scotland') Oscars: Forest Whitaker ('The Last King of Scotland') Best Supporting Actress 2011 NBR: Shailene Woodley ('The Descendants') 2010 NBR: Jacki Weaver ('Animal Kingdom') Oscars: Melissa Leo ('The Fighter') 2009 NBR: Anna Kendrick ('Up within the Air') Oscars: Mo'Nique ('Precious') 2008 NBR: Penelope Cruz ('Vicky Christina Barcelona') Oscars: Penelope Cruz ('Vicky Christina Barcelona') 2007 NBR: 'Amy Ryan' ('Gone Baby Gone') Oscars: Tilda Swinton ('Michael Clayton') 2006 NBR: Catherine O'Hara ('For Your Consideration') Oscars: Jennifer Hudson ('Dreamgirls') Best Supporting Actor 2011 NBR:Christopher Plummer ('Beginners') 2010 NBR: Christian Bale ('The Fighter') Oscars: Christian Bale ('The Fighter') 2009 NBR: Woodsy Harrelson ('The Messenger') Oscars: Christoph Waltz ('Inglourious Basterds') 2008 NBR: Josh Brolin ('Milk') Oscars: Heath Ledger ('The Dark Knight') 2007 NBR: Casey Affleck ('The Assignation of Jesse James through the Coward Robert Ford') Oscars: Javier Bardem ('No Country For Old Men') 2006 NBR: Djimon Hounsou ('Blood Diamond') Oscars: Alan Arkin ('Little Miss Sunshine') You are able to contact Mike Ryan on Twitter. Watercooler: In Praise of Glee's Santana

Amber Riley, Naya Rivera, Louise Morris See, because of this you have to make Christmas lists, kids! Several several weeks ago, Watercooler asked for Santa for just about any few things if this involves Glee, and last evening, we have got the primary one we wanted most likely probably the most: More Santana. Really, it absolutely was as being a "a very special Santanisode" that saw the spitfire who once declared "really the only straight I am is straight-up bitch" formally implementing her Sapphic self and displayed the always-tasty Naya Rivera's capacity to become a number of fierce, funny and believably vulnerable. Her version of "Constant Craving" with Idina Menzel? That was just extra awesome-sauce silently. Much less this really is really the first time Rivera is just about the interest she so highly warrants. All season, because the relaxation people are actually wondering if Karovsky could possibly get several scene this year, Santana's coming-out story remains brewing, and a pair of days back, we have got that Finn slap that appeared a good deal like "buckle her in, it's gonna get Lima Levels-adjacent up in here!" Lawdy, managed to get happen ever! Involving the scene along with her grandmother as well as the "I Kissed a womanInch number, the primary concentrate on La Lopez composed for the majority of the hour's lesser moments. Our only worry is when this story goes from this level. Clearly, she'll try taking some help handling the aftershocks to become freely outed (due to that anti-Sue commercial), and then we really hope the authors handle it correctly. Not properly - we'd never request that from people who just put a teacher into bed mattress getting students - just reasonably. Like, maybe use guidance counselor Emma as not just an Obsessive-compulsive disorder point. Or have Blaine have a relaxation from being smugly self-impressed to mentor her concerning how to be considered a well-modified gay teen with great hair like him. Just please, don't reduce her to a different weepy, whiny martyr like last year's canonization of St. Kurt. That mess is becoming travelling in roll-neck ponchos and Santana warrants so much better than that. Can you agree? How every time they handle Santana's story since everyone knows she's "Lebanese"? Tom Sherak On Oscar Drama: Were Days In Front Of Schedule

Despite per week of turbulence that saw his Oscarcast producer Brett Ratner resign over an inexplicable barrage of inappropriate public claims, adopted soon after by Ratner’s host Eddie Murphy, Academy leader Tom Sherak wants the to understand the Academy awards will be all right. If the happened in The month of january, I'd be hiding under my desk, Sherak explained. Look what is happening. You will find there's new producer in John Grazer, who met last evening with Don Mischer to have an hour . 5, to ensure that they are able to get started on getting a host. We're really 2 . 5 days in front of where i was this past year, when it comes to naming a number. Sherak, who Ive always considered to be a glass-half-full type of guy, stated he saw some vibrant spots regardless of the turbulence. Stated Sherak: In most time here, Ive never become as numerous emails in the constituency, after Brett resigned, all saying, how do i help? What do you want me to complete? Should you prefer a producer, allow me to suggest this individual. Or, I'm able to pursue that individual for host. Its like we awoke a sleeping giant. Among individuals who came forward was Grazer, Sherak stated. He stated, I wish to help. And So I stated, Let's say I requested you to definitely get to be the producer. He stated, ‘Ask me.’ Used to do, and that he stated, Im in. “ I wasnt surprised that Murphy walked out following Ratner. Both stated yes when Tower Heist was searching just like a large box office hit. It wasn’t, and i believe Rather’s exit gave Murphy a Get Free From Jail Free card, and that he tried on the extender. Sherak stated he completely understood Murphy’s exit, likening it for an actor departing an image in development following the director exits. We'd heard very early after Brett resigned that Eddie already felt uncomfortable without Brett being there, Sherak stated. We completely understood. Nobody is mad at Eddie or anything like this. This can be a creative process and Eddie is definitely an artist, you should know that. The truth that Eddie left early was great for us. In exactly what has happened, there's been a spirit of stuff that were accomplished for the great from the Academy, In my opinion. For the common variety of reviews by what happened when Ratners rantings were uncovered, Sherak stated that many that which was reported was wrong. For example, reviews stated that though Sherak told Deadline he was adhering with Ratner — having a zero-tolerance insurance policy for another indiscretion — Sherak transformed his mind when he grew to become conscious of Ratners explicit and lewd sexual exploit boasts to radio host Howard Stern. I understand that wasnt true because I told Sherak concerning the Stern discussion before he continued the record having a pledge to face by Ratner. And there is no emergency Board of Company directors meeting that forced his resignation, stated Sherak, who reconfirmed he was ready to stay with Ratner before the filmmaker quit. There is no board meeting, it had been an officials meeting that were planned two several weeks ago, also it was among a number of 10 products we spoken about, he stated. At this meeting, with all of these items happening, I presented the problem for them, and stated, heres things i think needed to happen. They took in and agreed beside me. Then, I had been drawn from an area, and Brett explained he'd resigned. This wasnt a board decision, it had been a Tom decision. It had been apparent that Ratner made things simpler by walking out. He did the best factor, Sherak stated. He didn’t wish to put me for the reason that position. When bad unexpected things happen, sometimes good stuff emerge from them. Hopefully Brett will follow the outreach he's stated hes going related to the city, and deal with the other activities that continued. Hes got an entire existence in front of him. And Sherak, Grazer and Mischer have a bit more than three several weeks to drag together an Oscarcast. Sherak wasn’t confident that the authors Ratner arranged will remain on. Individuals choices, and also the host selection, fall to Grazer and Mischer. The Academy is not panicked, he stated. Consider the process, it went lower rapidly however in an orderly fashion. How did we obtain a producer so quick when previously it's taken as lengthy as five several weeks? It had been the constituency coming toward help.

Looked lower upon for several years becoming an not worthy bastardization suited only to the reduced classes, it began to find authenticity inside the 19 thirties beneath the inspired tutelage of El Hadj M'Hamed El Anka, who founded a conservatory to teach teens (chaabi at first was completed exclusively by males) as professional artists. Bousbia's interest was sparked in 2004 when she went into Mohamed Ferkioui's small antique shop in Algiers to buy one, and came away with a good amount of tales about El Anka's conservatory, which Ferkioui attended. Inside the ensuing years, the helmer, an architecture student in Ireland, monitored all El Anka's students still alive, most scattered around Algiers or dwelling in Paris and Marseille. Their tales reflect the mid-20th-century good status for Algiers' Casbah, a warren of alleyways that for 100s of years was where you can the city's working class, mainly Muslims and Jews. The demographic made sense: Christian followers tended to appear in the eu quarters and spoke French a lot better than Arabic, whereas Muslims and Jews were living and labored together, connected by their shared Arabic language and common areas. Chaabi given from both heritages, as well as the artists speak here from the brotherhood. However, if the War of Independence came, handful of had time for music by 1963, Jews were removed from the citizenship, and several fled to France where they experienced additional racism. Meanwhile, the Casbah was allowed to crumble, which is people disseminate within the city, further dividing the old co-employees. Deeply influenced by their tales, Bousbia would bring the background music artists together. When Algeria wasn't forthcoming, she found sponsors to gather them in Marseille for just about any special performance. Only auds with hearts of stone can observe the reunion of individuals senior citizens males without tears, and merely people without ears will avoid swaying for the intoxicating tempos within the emotional concert. Audiences may notice how a French people inside the orchestra, christened "El Gusto," appear to get control just a little a lot of, as well as the concert's formality seems to go to against chaabi's roots in bars and coffee houses, book stores, nevertheless the privilege of seeing these males together and hearing them play supersedes all quibbles. Visually, "El Gusto" can be a pleasure, with Nuria Roldos' fluid camera fantastically studying the Casbah's byways. Archival black-and-white-colored photos and footage are very integrated, and appear is tops Dvds of El Gusto's performances sell well. To ensure that as Mariah referred to to Barbara, it wasn't an easy pregnancy. I dont think I understood the enormity as well as the magnitude of what it really provides the body, the singer mentioned. Moving two babies. Unless of course obviously somebodys experienced it, its tough to determine what I experienced, because my pregnancy was very unique if this involves what went lower in my opinion. What went lower was extended bed mattress relaxation, a few false sensors and several excursions for the hospital, which left Mimi wondering if her body would find yourself getting within the physical strain. I'd serious back problems, she mentioned. I used to be afraid I wasnt prone to be capable of walk properly again. It absolutely was a massive strain. For a way the twins became a member of the earth when Mariah hit her 35th week of childbearing, it absolutely was a appear both mom and dad were very familiar with. They showed up towards the planet with a live version [of my song Fantasy], Mariah told Barbara. Roger Corman Almost Made an All-Male 'Alien,' and Other Secrets About the Film

Last month, 'Alien Vault,' a definitive behind-the-scenes account of Ridley Scott's 'Alien,' was released. The book features all sorts of goodies, including blueprints of the Nostromo, photos from the set and concept art. There are also a ton of secret tidbits about the making of the film and, thankfully, the good folks over at io9 have summed up the book's best information in one easy post. (Because, who has the time to read books these days? Honestly?) Our favorite bits: Roger Corman almost directed 'Alien' with an all-male cast: Corman was originally interested in Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett's first script, which included an all-male cast and dialogue that was very "matter-of-fact." Then Ridley Scott signed onto the project. Somehow, Roger Daltrey of the Who factored into the making of this film: The singer, who was next door to the studio where the film was being shot, lent Ridley Scott laser beams that Daltrey was experimenting with for the band's next tour. The lasers were used during the facehuggers resting place scene. Sigourney Weaver wore thigh-high boots to her audition: Uh, so, there's that. The whole thing is a pretty fascinating read, and if you don't have the time (or dough) to buy the book, it's worth checking the io9 list out. Grey's Anatomy's Jesse Williams on Catherine Avery's Arrival and "Jaxie's" Future

Grey's Anatomy, Debbie Allen and Jesse Williams If you thought Meredith Grey had a difficult mother, just wait until you meet the matriarach of the prestigious Avery family. In this week's Grey's Anatomy, Jackson's mother, Catherine Avery (portrayed by Debbie Allen, who has directed multiple episodes of the ABC medical drama) comes to Seattle Grace to perform a groundbreaking surgery. His intrusive mother's visit becomes even more uncomfortable for him when it's revealed what procedure she's doing: A penis transplant. Grey's Anatomy First Look: Seattle Grace hits the dugout TVGuide.com caught up with Jesse Williams to get the scoop on Catherine's stay at the hospital along with what's in store for the future of Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and Jackson (Or "Jaxie," as he likes to call them): What kind of person is Catherine Avery? Is she Ellis Grey, 2.0? Jesse Williams: I would say she has a lot in common with her in that she is a bit of a narcissist, she's incredibly meddling and all-knowing, not only in medical skills, but that spills over to social confidence and relationships, just giving advice on every level. However, I would say she's very different from Ellis Grey (Kate Burton) in that she's very warm, very maternal and nurturing. She's a touchy[-feely] mom who wants to swaddle you up. That's engaging for Jackson, but also a bit of a deterrent because there was a stage in his life for that, but he's always been trying to make it on his own. Jackson doesn't want to live off his legacy and his name, which also conflicts with him wanting to be close to his mother. We hear Jackson will ship Lexie off. Why doesn't he want her to meet his mother? Williams: He doesn't want to scare her off. He doesn't want to have her feel like she's being hit by a battering ram and getting grilled. He doesn't expect his mother to be there long. He expects her to show up, give a lecture, and take off. He doesn't know there's a groundbreaking procedure that she wants to do, and he has no idea she'll essentially be living there for that short time. With sending Lexie off, he's trying to do something right, trying to start new with her and let the pace set itself by not rushing into anything. Grey's Anatomy's Shonda Rhimes: The love between Cristina and Owen is still there What are Jackson and Catherine like in surgery? Is he trying to prove himself? Williams: Sure, he wants to have her approval and wants her to think he is ahead in his class. But I don't feel like he is overburdened by wanting to be good enough for her in the same way as [he is with] his grandfather, who in many ways, doesn't like him as a person. He wants his mom to not be embarrassed about him, but he doesn't want her to be meddling all up in his sh--. What kind of interaction does Catherine have with Jackson's mentor, Mark (Eric Dane)? Does he seek her approval? Williams: Yeah, it's nice that Mark is sometimes funny, sometimes a prick, but he's always cocky and confident. It's nice to see somebody put anybody with those characteristics in their place, or flip them on their heads where they're the one seeking approval when they're very stingy in dishing it out. It's part of Jackson's growth process with Mark in figuring out who this dude is. There's a part of Jackson who doesn't know if he should take him seriously, both as a personality and as a potential threat to his girlfriend and love life. Will he be a problem or a real asset to Jackson? What's in store for Meredith and Derek now that they've lost baby Zola? Who else will Catherine interact with at Seattle Grace? Williams: You're going to see Catherine Avery get into it with Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). Her dynamic with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is funny because Catherine starts meddling. She knew Ellis Grey, she knows the Chief (James Pickens, Jr.), so she is aware of who Meredith is. Her trying to toy with Meredith a bit is to suss out what the deal is with Lexie. She's trying to play a not-very-slick meddling detective, usually directly in front of Jackson's face. It harkens back to what Jackson and Meredith went through when Jackson's grandfather was here. Meredith was the only person who really got the pressure and frustration of being a legacy and trying to make your own name. Because he worked alongside April (Sarah Drew) and has been friends with her for years, Jackson's mom knows her as well and taught her in a class. Unbeknownst to Jackson, it turns out April has not only been staying in touch with his mom, which he didn't know about, but they're actually Facebook friends. [Laughs] He's startled and annoyed by the idea she's even on Facebook, so he feels there's no confidence in confidentially anymore. Moving forward, what will we see for Lexie and Jackson? Especially since Chyler Leigh hasn't been around much this season. Williams: I'm actually really interested in how the next few episodes will play out with the two of them, "Jaxie," as it were. Now they will have to deal with the reality of working in the same space all the time, working with Mark, her trying to find her place, him having the pressure of fifth year, and also, Jackson trying to juggle everything. They've had a really nice stride for a couple months, so I'm excited to see where it goes. But you definitely will see them engaged in a very serious and relaxed dialogue and will actually be interacting in the coming episodes. Grey's Anatomy's Jaw-Dropping Moments: Meredith and Derek wed, George dies Mark clearly still cares for Lexie, so how will that affect "Jaxie's" relationship? Williams: We haven't totally sussed that out yet. Mark has traditionally been a dirt bag who just chases tail, but his relationship with Lexie was real and it's hard to shake those feelings. The whole triangle is about feelings and how quickly they can fade or return, or convincing ourselves we're over somebody when we're not. Jackson went into the relationship with eyes wide open and he knows the deal. Mark is doing a fairly admirable job about staying in his place. He really cares a lot about Jackson as a student and a surgeon. How do you feel about the fans who feel so strongly about Mark and Lexie getting back together? Williams: I take the audience's awareness very seriously. I always want to be mindful of that as we make decisions as actors to put time and energy into creating these characters. I'm aware that they have more information than Jackson does. When they see Jackson and Lexie, they're keenly aware of her history with Mark and they expect something to happen. They want to figure out if she's really over him and if she's moving on. It's a perfectly reasonable question, and what I've been enjoying playing is Jackson dealing with that in a mature way, being aware of it, but not being obsessed with it. Jackson is learning that he can't control everything. Do you want to see Lexie with Jackson or Mark? Hit the comments with your thoughts. Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.

Greek filmmakers protest cuts

The Greek Film Center's funding worries have spurred filmmakers to aid individuals protesting budget cuts. As Greek public servants shut lower metropolitan areas with strikes to protest the belt-tightening sweeping the nation, the film business has became a member of within the chorus of malcontent."The crisis revealed completely the structural lack of the Greek Film Center and also the Secretary of state for Culture regarding cinema," states Filippos Tsitos, helmer of black comedy "Unfair World." He adds the Film Center, for many years, the main supply of gold coin for local filmmakers, continues to be promising funds -- sometimes within the 100s of 1000's of dollars -- even though it is not scattering any gold coin previously 2 yrs. The middle will not even hand out the 20% needed by most co-production contracts required to partner with foreign productions, states Tsitos, who adds the Film Center has massive financial obligations, although amounts were not available.Calls and emails towards the Film Center haven't been came back. Lengthy belittled through the emerging generation of Greek filmmakers to be a haven of cronyism and bureaucracy, the org was slated for reform using the passage of the new film funding law this past year that incorporated tax incentives and streamlining rules. However the changes were placed on hold once the latest wave of austerity measures, forced around the debt-laden country by European loan companies, became predominant, say Greek film authorities who didn't desire to be named. With Greek filmmakers not able to boost even their 20% share of budgets, they'll no more have the ability to get together with nations in better financial health, as other small nations in the area do. That's frustrating towards the new wave of Greek filmmakers like Athina Rachel Tsangari ("Attenberg") and Yorgos Lanthimos ("Dogtooth"), who're winning kudos abroad and depend on co-production gold coin to create their films. However the problems of A holiday in greece go well past the nation's edges. The planet financial community doubts the beleagured country will have the ability to search itself from under its 340 billion ($454 billion) debt because it struggles to locate legal methods to slash constitutionally protected condition jobs. The Thessaloniki Film Festival, which unspools November. 4-13, continues to be able to escape a few of the discomfort, because of a Eu grant, support through the EU's Media program and gold coin devoted to the digital market library and Crossroads co-production forum. The fest is on firm footing not less than the following two models after 2011, states fest prexy Dimitri Eipides, who adds that whenever overtaking the general public-sector organization this past year, his team has reduced the fest's $8.six million debt to simply $two million, and it is trying to repay it entirely. Other key film orgs haven't been as fortunate. The Hellenic Audiovisual Institute, which coordinates media support programs, and Greece's national film archive, used by of 1000's of historic prints, are now being shuttered. And also the bigger of pubcaster ERT's two channels is placed to prevent procedures, getting rid of lots of jobs."The federal government might have shut lower other useless organizations rather than quitting on something which really has related to our national culture, when it comes to films, TV documentaries and audiovisual material," states Greek helmer Constantine Giannaris, whose films are becoming a retrospective at Thessaloniki.Despite all of the closures, Giannaris states, there appears to become a renaissance happening. "It's on the low-budget level, but, nonetheless, there appears to become a surge of creativeness and lots of work being carried out, particularly by more youthful filmmakers within their 30s and early 40s," Giannaris adds. The creative surge is happening among a national crisis, states Giannaris, is even more inspiring. Talkback: Seriously, Who Asked For a Mister Ed Movie?

Guys, it is really time that we sit down and have a long, hard discussion. I don’t know which of you keeps suggesting that we continually adapt and remake the beloved TV series and films of our youth but it has got to stop… especially after hearing today’s announcement that Fox 2000 is reviving the ’60s talking horse series Mister Ed for the big screen. First, the facts: On the heels (or hooves) of Fox 2000’s other horse feature Flicka, the studio has picked up the rights to the Walter R. Brooks sitcom, which aired originally from 1961 to 1966. While Fox hasn’t selected a writer or director, they do know that a live horse will be used and made to talk with the help of CGI technology. The project was brought to Fox by David Friendly and Jim Mahoney, who have spent a few years securing the rights to the television series from different estates. I understand that there is an entire generation that has probably never heard of Mister Ed and thinks that the first talking animal was Babe. I get that in some ways, Mister Ed: The Movie will bridge a generational gap, and provide a welcome nostalgia rush for some of Ed’s original audience. I know that talking animal movies and cute animal movies in general are easy bank. (In the past two years alone, Kung Fu Panda 2 grossed over $662 million, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel took in over $443 million and Bolt made $314 million.) Finally, I realize that beloved entities such as Mister Ed have a built-in audience. I get that at all, but if we keep greenlighting adaptations, who will be motivated to conceive a new original television series or film, that thirty, forty or fifty years down the line, Hollywood can egregiously remake? What do you think? Is Mister Ed one remake that actually excites you? Would you buy a ticket if Clint Eastwood makes a cameo (as he did in the original series below)? · Fox 2000 Bringing ‘Mr. Ed’ to the Big Screen [THR]

Sting: I Want 25 More Years Of Music

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- At 85, Tony Bennett released an album that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard albums chart this week. Sting, who turns 60 on Sunday, is hoping he will still be going strong at 85, too. Hopefully the next 25 years will be the same if I have it, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said of his own success. I couldnt live without music. Id rather play music or die. Sting is celebrating 25 years as solo artist; in the late 1970s he debuted as the leader of The Police, scoring massive hits with songs like Every Breath You Take and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic. As a solo singer, he went on to sell multiple multiplatinum albums and overall, he is the owner of 16 Grammy Awards. This week he released Sting: 25 Years, his 3-disc greatest hits set. On Oct. 18, he will release Sting: The Best of 25 Years, which features 12 remastered tracks from his solo career. Sting says he has no plans to release a new album, though he says he is a writing a musical-play based on my hometown in the north of England. Its about shipbuilding. It will be directed by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Brian Yorkey. Sting will also launch his Back to Bass Tour on Oct. 21 in Boston. Hes playing the bass with a small band on the tour. I just did the 200-date tour with this symphony orchestra, so I just wanted to throw a curve at that and do something like I used to, he said. Sting says though he is a veteran, hes still learning as a musician. It doesnt end, he said. Theres no way you can say, Oh, I finished learning. You do that when you die. Sting and country singer Vince Gill recently recorded a concert for the CMT series Crossroads. The special, which features the two singing each others hits, airs on Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving. Copyright 2011 by Associated Press. Laughing when confronted with Dying: '50/50' along with other Terminal Illness Movies That Buck Convention

You'd think a film in regards to a youthful guy fighting a terminal disease will be a huge downer -- a la 'Dying Young' -- but '50/50' is not your average death's door tearjerker. The funny new flick offers lots of laughs together with the tender moments, and handles to locate humor within an incredibly depressing situation. Frederick Gordon-Levitt stars as Adam, a 27-year-old radio producer identified having a rare type of cancer which has a 50/50 survival rate. (Hence the title.) His closest friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) becomes Adam's rock, driving him to doctor's visits and annoying him with nights around town. Obviously, this is not the very first time Rogen has performed a personality taking care of someone facing a terminal disease. Remember 'Funny People'? Rogen dutifully hidden in Adam Sandler's ailing character each evening. However I digress. To '50/50.' It's refreshing to determine a 'terminal illness' movie that is not some facts about the doting lady nursing the individual to health (cough, cough, 'Dying Young'), and ultimately leading right into a sappy, sappy, sad, sappy love story. In the end, it's pretty simple for this specific genre to obtain schmaltzy. (Cough, cough, 'A Walk to consider.A) Sure: 'Terms of Endearment' is a superb movie, but everything about this appears carefully calculated to extract tears. If you are searching for something a bit more subversive with lots of inappropriate dying-related jokes, you might want to try one of these simple rather. Behold, a listing of my five favorite movies about people fighting terminal illness. (Sorry, 'Last Holiday.' You did not result in the cut. As I such as the premise of the Full Latifah laugh-riot, the flick itself falls very, very short. And despite the fact that I give 'The Bucket List' credit for making popular the saying and dealing with dying inside a brand new way, watching Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman skydiving did not quite make my top-5.) 'The Royal Tenenbaums.' Royal's stomach cancer might not be real, however i would still reason that this fits the 'terminal illness' genre due to how his alleged illness causes everybody around him to behave. Royal's fake cancer wins him a place in the household home, and garners attention from his estranged family. Sure, he will get caught. But he got in certain much-needed face time with your family as the trick survived. &ampampampampampampampltcenter&ampampampampampampampgt 'Igby Goes Lower.' I recognize it might be a little of the spoiler to show who comes lower using the terminal illness within this flick, and so i will not. I'll state that it made my list due to its refreshingly cynical method of dying. Lots of movies present the dying person as some kind of perfect angel. Not that one. (Bonuses for featuring Bill Pullman AND Shaun Goldblum. Extra bonuses for seeing Kieran Culkin yell 'Sookie!!' to Claire Danes years before Bill and Eric managed to get extremely popular on 'True Bloodstream.') &ampampampampampampltcenter&ampampampampampampgt 'Beaches.' OK, it is a little schmaltzy. But Bette Midler saves 'Beaches' from being too syrupy sweet. Her dying Best friend of 3 decades, Hillary, was type of a wealthy bitch sometimes, but ultimately their friendship could endure unfaithfulness, jealousy or even a bizarre love triangular. The Divine One reaches share Hillary's last moments together with her by the pool. Like '50/50,' this can be a touching story about friendship. Plus, it is the flick that introduced us 'The Wind Beneath My Wings.' &ampampampampampltcenter&ampampampampampgt 'Moulin Rouge.' It figures Satine (Nicole Kidman) would satisfy the guy of her dreams (Ewan McGregor) right before falling ill with TB! (That old-timey disease is a great indication this super-stylized movie is a real period piece.) Despite the fact that you will find lots of professions of great love, the singing, dancing and John Leguizamo keep 'Moulin Rouge' from being yet another tragic love story. &ampampampampltcenter&ampampampampgt 'My Existence Without Me.' As though being identified having a terminal illness in 2009 . wasn't bad enough, Ann (Sarah Polley) also offers a husband (Scott Speedman) and 2 kids. Damn! She embarks by herself bucket-listy journey, including some steamy encounters with Mark Ruffalo. Again, that one scores points for eschewing the entire dying-person-can-do-no-wrong trap. &ampampampltcenter&ampampampgt ('50/50' image thanks to Summit Entertainment)

Homeland: TV Review

It's unlikely that any other new scripted series has these words in it: "Bin Laden is dead." Homeland, an intriguing and thrilling drama entry from Showtime, makes use of those words in a sentence that clearly puts the show on modern ground: It's not just a post-9/11 series; it's a post-Saddam, post-bin Laden look at terrorism that could have been shot last week.our editor recommends'Homeland' Previews: Claire Danes Uses Her Interrogation Voice (Video)Comic-Con 2011: 'Dexter' and 'Homeland' Get Premiere Dates and New Trailers (Video)First Look at Showtime's New Series 'Homeland' (Video) PHOTOS: Fall TV Preview 2011: The New Shows The series, easily one of the fall's best, centers on Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), missing for eight years and presumed dead. He turns up in the rubble of an al-Qaida compound just lit up by U.S. bombs after a tip that one of the most wanted terrorists was going to be there. Brody is pulled out and returned home as a national hero. CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), an expert in Middle East terrorism, has immediate suspicions, but she's being marginalized at the agency because one of her recent missions in Iraq went sideways - and, besides, nobody wants to ruin the feel-good story that's making the agency look so good. Carrie's intel is that Brody had actually "been turned" and could be plotting an attack on America from the inside. It's a compelling premise and one the writers quickly move to gray areas. Carrie's rogue actions run afoul of her biggest supporter at the CIA, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin in a grounded, nuanced performance). She's a top-notch agent but also reckless, and what the audience is shown pretty quickly is that Carrie is taking pills for a mental condition the agency doesn't know about. (She's getting them from her sister, a psychiatrist, who becomes just another person, like Saul, helping Carrie while she in turn puts their lives at risk.) PHOTOS: Fall TV's 12 Most Anticipated Shows Who do we believe? Brody has definitely changed. Is Carrie stressed out and possibly mentally incapacitated? Is there a little bit of truth in each story? Both Lewis and Danes are excellent in Homeland. His coiled intensity - and mystery - contrast nicely with her manic need to be right. The cast also includes David Harewood as David Estes, head of the CIA's counterterrorism center and a rising star in the agency. His future basically rides on Brody being the hero everyone believes him to be, thus he's antagonistic to Carrie's suspicions. Morena Baccarin plays Jessica Brody, whose life is turned upside down when she finds out her husband is still alive after all these years. STORY: Showtime Puts 'Homeland' Online Ahead of October Premiere Showtime really has something in this show because there's a lot of intrigue in the spy-and-terrorist angle, especially as it clashes with privacy rights, suspicion of our own troops and how a hero might think the eight lost years weren't worth it in a war he might not believe in. The only worry going forward with Homeland is how long does it play the is-he-or-isn't-he card? And if he is, how long will it be interesting waiting for him to make a move against his country? Or is the whole point watching Carrie come unraveled? But those are questions to be answered at a later time. Which Might You Rather (Not) See: New Year's Eve or Human Centipede 2?

Inside the brand-new trailer for completely new Year’s Eve, Garry Marshall’s holiday-designed movie event that provides to supply the saying “ensemble romantic comedy” an undesirable title, Robert P Niro miracles what might beat “NY on Year’s Eve.” I’ll let guess what happens: Not throwing all of your actorly credibility your window confetti-style to appear alongside Zac Efron, Jon Bon Jovi and Ludacris in the movie which has Ashton Kutcher in a lift while using annoying girl from Glee. You know what happens other moviegoers could also consider a lot better than seeing Garry Marshall’s vision of recent you are able to city on Year’s Eve? Tom Six’s Human Centipede 2, which inspires similar nausea but also for different reasons. These two features have an overabundance to keep than it may seem. Both Year’s Eve and Human Centipede 2 appear to become overblown follow-ups Year’s Eve might be the most recent chapter in Garry Marshall’s overstuffed holiday vignette movie series that started with Valentine’s Day. Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) might be the stomach-churning follow-up to Tom Six’s Human Centipede (First Sequence). Both films include an aura of disturbing self-satisfaction (no less than, knowing within the below trailers): Year’s Eve in the way it assumes that audiences may decide to see what seems as an unapologetically awful script socialized out only because of the star energy involved. Human Centipede 2 in the way its primary character, Martin, is passionate about Tom Six’s first film Human Centipede which is inspired to produce their very own 12-person pet because of it. And no matter the fact both trailers might disgust us, people will probably see these movies. Still undecided? I’ll help you create an informed decision by talking about the disheartening casting notes: Robert P Niro — who gave us the very best performances from the century in Raging Bull and Taxi Driver — plays “Harry Buckingam, a man dying in the hospital.” Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Pfeiffer plays “a frustrated executive secretary who decides to tackle her unfulfilled resolutions.” Katherine Heigl plays “a catering company instructed to pay attention to December 31.” plays “Randy” — no character information given, but from a few things i’ve noticed in this trailer, he plays a depressed Year’s Eve non-believer who must shave. Ludacris plays a cop monitoring the Occasions Square festivities. Ryan Seacrest plays themselves. Jon Bon Jovi plays “a effective rock star.” As well as the list — including three Academy Award individuals who win in general (P Niro, Hilary Swank and Halle Berry) continues. Human Centipede stars Laurence R. Harvey just like a squat loner who longs to stitch twelve people together mouth-to-anus. Which might you rather (not) see? You realize me getting seen both trailers. Or even Garry Marshall and Tom Six must merge their two franchises for just about any next feature: Human Centipede 3 (St. Patrick’s Day Sequence), through which “The lives of numerous couples and singles in NY intertwine throughout the time of St. Patrick’s Day each time a mad investigator mutilates these phones have the ability to assemble the very best, 20-person pede.” Tagline (as quipped by Katherine Heigl inside the glossy trailer): “There’s apt to be more stars in this ‘pede in comparison to rehab!” Weigh in below!

Work: Who Medicine New Branch Manager?

John Krasinski, Erection dysfunction Helms, Craig Robinson Steve Carell is extended-gone (but nevertheless without any Emmy!), James Spader might be the brand new Boss of Sabre, meaning there's just one small question for your Office to resolve when the NBC comedy returns for Season 8. For people who missed the job listing, the branch manager position at Dunder Mifflin is open once again after Robert California (Spader) won the gig and handled to use his in position from branch manager to Boss in a few several days time. But who can it be? We weigh the advantages and disadvantages for likely in-house candidates: Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) Why He'll Have the Job: Jim is a good sales rep, he's been no. 2 in Scranton for quite a while and, lest we forget, he's one of the only sane people employed at Dunder Mifflin. Audiences have rooted for Jim forever filter systems put him inside the hot chair and discover what continues? Why He'll not: To start with, doesn't Jim's presence round the search committee instantly exclude him from consideration? More seriously, execute producer Paul Lieberstein told HitFix.com that Jim wasn't inside the running to be successful Michael after his prior stint as co-manager title with Michael in Season 6. Just be honest wasn't really enjoyable to find out Jim in charge now could it happen to be? Especially since this time around around he'd have much more responsibility and less time to smirk within the camera. Fall Preview: Get scoop inside your favorite returning shows Andy Bernard (Erection dysfunction Helms) Why He'll Have the Job: Large Tuna (also called Jim) may be most likely probably the most apparent choice, nevertheless the Nard Dog may be the best. To start with, he's most likely probably the most impressive resume due to his strong sales record and becoming graduated in the little school referred to as Cornell (ever experienced it?). Second, Andy's charm lies largely along with his naivety and inadequate self-awareness (paging Michael Scott), which might cause him to a great foil for your tricky Robert, who spent half of his interview fighting that "situations are sex." Third, making Andy Erin's boss would be the perfect approach to participate in the duo's great chemistry although dragging out their will-they-or-won't-they tension. fourth, he really, would really like the job. Why He'll not: Due to crazy jealous Gabe, Andy's interview didn't go that well (even though the he did remember what lengths the sun's sun rays is which is diameter. Props!) If producers really decide they require Andy and Erin to acquire together, there's little chance of that happening as extended as he's in charge. Finally, we're not able to ignore Andy's anger management problem, which made him punch a dent inside the wall in Season 3. Will the stress in the job enhance his violent side again? Did Dunder Mifflin increase the risk for cut? Have a look at our report on favorite TV workplaces Darryl Philbin (Craig Robinson) Why He'll Have the Job: After trading years stealing moments since the p facto leader in the warehouse crew, Darryl has proven to become the addition to operate we would never know we needed (sorry, Erin!) Darryl isn't afraid to go to after what he wants, can stand his ground (ready facing Robert?) and knows wherever his appeal lies (also called he knows working the fact he's a minority together with just one father). Also, his surprising cluelessness within the interview shown that Darryl is capable of doing as over his mind and from his league (almost) additionally to Michael Scott did. Why He'll not: His slightly disastrous interview - need we're saying more? Yes, he may hold the diversity card attempting to his advantage, but he really didn't appear to understand what the branch manager does (thanks in no small part for the world's best boss) which he didn't even learn how to write a resume, as well as turn one inch. Clippy might not be apt to be around if you would like him. Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) Why He'll Have the Job: Yes, he fired a gun at the office throughout his blink-and-you-missed-it term as branch manager. But, as Kelly Kapoor's grandfather familiar with say, "Sometimes the hands that jumps in the grave and grabs you around the throat - this is the hands you would like round the wheel." Why He'll not: He fired a gun. At The Office. The completely new season in the Office premieres on Thursday at 9/8c on NBC. Who do you want to end up being the new Dunder Mifflin branch manager?

Happy 87th Birthday to Lauren Bacall! What's Her Greatest Onscreen Moment?

Lauren Bacall: smokiest dame who ever lived? Besides Myrna Loy, who was so (literally) smoky that Nicotine dripped off the screen? Today is Bacall’s 87th birthday, and even if she lost the Best Supporting Actress Oscar to that two-bit whippersnapper Juliette Binoche, she’s still a supremely respected star of a bygone era. What’s your favorite Bacall moment of all time? I’m taking us back to the start — and to a very revered classic. In 1944’s To Have and Have Not, Bacall slinks away from Bogie and over to the piano for a devastating, husky rendition of Hoagy Carmichael’s “How Little We Know.” If you can survive the sauna of sexuality that is her voice, you still have to get over that unbelievable face. Has any other star — including Marilyn, Elizabeth, or Grace — ever embodied the term “knockout” so fiercely?

No 50 Cent, You May Not Name Your Football Cancer Film After Africa's Greatest Literary Work

Remember how rapper-filmmaker 50 Cent wrote, produced, and stars in a film about a football player who gets diagnosed with cancer? The Mario van Peebles-directed flick was set to launch Fiddy into dramatic stardom under the title Things Fall Apart until reps for Nigerian author Chinua Achebe — who wrote a little book also called Things Fall Apart, practically the most famous African novel ever — contacted him with a copyright infringement complaint. 50 offered $1 million for use of the title, prompting Achebe’s camp to shoot back with a resounding rejection. “The novel with the said title was initially produced in 1958 (that is 17 years before rapper 50 Cent was born), listed as the mostly read book in modern African literature,” Achebe’s reps reportedly answered, “and won’t be sold for even 1 Billion Dollars.” Ouch. The flick’s reportedly been retitled to All Things Fall Apart. Check out the trailer below! [Naijan.com via Guardian]

50/50

Anna Kendrick and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in '50/50.'A Summit Entertainment release presented in association with Mandate Pictures of a Point Grey production. Produced by Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen, Ben Karlin. Executive producers, Nathan Kahane, Will Reiser. Co-producers, Nicole Brown, Kelli Konop, Tendo Nagenda. Directed by Jonathan Levine. Screenplay, Will Reiser.Adam - Joseph Gordon-Levitt Kyle - Seth Rogen Katherine - Anna Kendrick Rachael - Bryce Dallas Howard Alan - Philip Baker Hall Diane - Anjelica Huston A guy in his late 20s faces even odds of beating cancer in "50/50," a title that could also describe the ratio of too-obvious humor to genuinely affecting drama in this uneven seriocomedy. Will Reiser's semiautobiographical script initially prescribes too artificial a story treatment for its characters but is rescued by a genial, low-key vibe that builds in sensitivity and emotion up through the final reels. Handicapped by a depressing if widely relatable cancer-sucks premise, Summit's campaign is placing misleading emphasis on Seth Rogen's rambunctious best-friend turn to sell laff-seeking audiences on this likable but hardly uproarious Sept. 30 release. The kind of responsible, risk-averse guy who regularly goes running around his native Seattle and won't cross a street until the traffic light permits, 27-year-old NPR staffer Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is understandably surprised when he learns of the malignant tumors along his spine. In an overly cold, anesthetized scene intended to emphasize Adam's shellshock and the impersonal nature of the medical establishment, an oncologist tells him he has a 50/50 chance of survival. Adam tries to remain optimistic, no easy feat after his mother, Diane (Anjelica Huston), and his best bud, Kyle (Rogen), react to the news in ways more overbearing than helpful. Of course, the one who fails Adam is the one he needs the most: Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard), his sexy artist girlfriend, promises to stand by him and nurse him back to health, but her discomfort with the ickier aspects of Adam's chemo regimen -- tastefully depicted here with some heard-but-not-seen vomiting -- is an immediate giveaway that her commitment is rather less than what it appears to be. Around the same time, Adam begins counseling sessions with newbie therapist Katherine (Anna Kendrick) that are by turns awkward, tetchy and mildly flirtatious. While Reiser's screenplay has its roots in personal experience, these setup passages ring false in ways that suggest a movie torn between its crowd-pleasing imperatives and its obligation to say something insightful about Adam's experience as well as Reiser's. There's something admirable about the pic's willingness to suggest that our nearest and dearest do sometimes abandon us in our hour of greatest need, and the searing confrontation scene that seals Rachael's betrayal is impressively bold and nervy. Yet this subplot as a whole, from its convenient demonization of the unfaithful g.f. to its post-breakup celebratory montage, leaves an altogether sour aftertaste. Similarly problematic is the pat, idealized development of Adam and Katherine's relationship as they begin to blur the doctor-patient boundaries. If these emotional developments feel too cardboard, there are compensations in Jonathan Levine's direction, whose overall mellowness feels at one with Adam's nice-guy passivity. The essential appeal of "50/50" is that the cancer patient here is someone who is decidedly not the life of the party, and Gordon-Levitt is ideally cast as the sort of sensitive, self-effacing guy who seems more special and appealing the longer you spend with him. Actor and script adroitly convey conflicting emotions that patients with long-term illnesses and their loved ones will surely recognize: Adam's frustration at having to comfort those closest to him rather than be comforted, and his refusal of the easy pity offered by friends and acquaintances in between snatches of small talk. It's this level of quiet perceptiveness that enables "50/50" to finally, ahem, get into your system. Supporting thesps are effective even when the pic uses them in questionable ways. Howard, who between this and "The Help" is perhaps in danger of being typecast as a villain, nonetheless makes Rachael as human and sympathetic as possible under the circumstances. Rogen, allowed to set perhaps too broad and vulgar a tone at first, eventually dials it down as the pic takes its exploration of Adam and Kyle's friendship to a deeper level. Best of all is Huston, whose casting in what initially seems to be a slight nagging-mom role pays off down the road with enormous emotion. Final scene is of a piece with the film's loose, easy mood, yet quietly surprising in the note it chooses to end on. Pic overall marks a flawed but reasonably confident progression for Levine after his 2008 Sundance hit "The Wackness," with which it shares an exuberant belief in the therapeutic benefits of pot smoking, no matter what ails you. Tech package is no-nonsense but pro, with Vancouver and other British Columbia locations standing in effectively for gray, chilly Seattle.Camera (Technicolor/Deluxe color), Terry Stacey; editor, Zene Baker; music, Michael Giacchino; music supervisors, Jim Black, Gabe Hilfer; production designer, Annie Spitz; art director, Ross Dempster; set decorator, Shane Vieau; costume designer, Carla Hetland; sound (SDDS/DTS/Dolby Digital), Shane Connelly; supervising sound editor, Robert C. La-Bas. A Criminal Education (La-Bas. Educazione criminale)

An Eskimo, Figli del Bronx, Minerva Pictures Group production, in collaboration with Film Commission Regione Campania, Gesco, Fare Piu, Audioimage, On the Docks, Rai Cinema. Produced by Dario Formisano, Gaetano Di Vaio, Pietro Pizzimento, Gianluca Curti. Executive producer, Gennaro Fasolino. Directed, written by Guido Lombardi. With: Kader Alassane, Moussa Mone, Esther Elisha, Billi Serigne Faye, Alassane Doulougou, Fatima Traore, Salvatore Ruocco. (French, English, Italian, Neapolitan dialect dialogue)Finally, a refreshing look at the problems of illegal immigration in Italy that not only thinks outside the box but appears to be involved in the community it's spotlighting. Freshman helmer Guido Lombardi's "La-Bas. A Criminal Education" has some first-timer flaws, but it's also got sincerity and honesty miles in advance of most other big-budgeted local product. The small Rome- and Naples-based shingles backing Lombardi should be commended for putting coin into a pic that might not have great local legs but, with the right critical push, could travel the fest circuit and even hit Euro arthouse screens. Castel Volturno is a coastal town 18 miles from Naples with a large African population and a problem with the Camorra. Artist Yssouf (Kader Alassane) is fresh off the plane from Africa, in search of an uncle who promised him a job and good money. Instead Yssouf only finds impoverished Africans struggling to make a living and maintain a sense of community. When he does locate Uncle Moses (Moussa Mone), Yssouf discovers he's a drug dealer profiting from an uneasy partnership with a branch of the Camorra. Tempted by the possibility of earning quick dough, he joins his uncle's biz and distances himself from the supportive, decent people he met when he first arrived. He'd like to see the incandescent Suad (Esther Elisha) again, but when he discovers she's a prostitute, each is too ashamed to communicate. Once a devout Muslim, Yssouf now drinks, skips prayers, and begins to feel increasingly uncomfortable with his participation in his uncle's shady dealings. Rivalry between warring Camorra factions exposes the Africans' dependence on local drug lords, and violence becomes inevitable. The murderous night at the pic's finale is based on an incident from 2008, when six African men were gunned down outside a tailor's shop. "La-bas," which is French for "down there," reveals the vulnerability of members of this community who risked their lives to get to Italy, only to be confronted with a lack of employment and being marginalized as outsiders. Lombardi's script could use a bit of tightening here and a little expansion there, but the sense of place is tangible, and it seems to look at the community from within rather than the usual vantage point of righteous first-worlders naively eager to prove they care. The decision to shoot mostly in French and English rather than Italian adds to the authenticity. Thesps are a mix of pros and amateurs, and while the combination works, there's one stand-out in Elisha, an Afro-Italian actress who radiates confidence. Lensing is informal and uncomplicated, though color correction on the print viewed appears not to be complete, and digital quality can be uneven. Editing builds toward the end and finds exactly the right rhythm to make the most of the tension.Camera (color, HD), Francesca Amitrano; editors, Annalisa Forgione, Beppe Leonetti; music, Giordano Corapi; production designer, Maica Rotondo; costume designer, Francesca Balzano; sound, Davide Mastropaolo, Leandro Sorrentino; assistant director, casting, Sergio Panariello.
